Giving Up Two Great Bikes To Charity

Well, the day finally came when I decided its time to let go of two of my old trusty steeds! I gave to Purple Heart today my 10 year old, 30,000+ mile Bianchi road bike and 15,000+ mile Trek Single Track 730 Mountain bike.

The Bianchi really did have a lot of miles on it and I still rode it up to the day I gave it away. Although all the miles it has seen over the last several month’s was on a trainer. The Trek was still being used up until 4 month’s ago by my youngest son Taylor. What was my reason for donating the bikes? Well, its a short story, but I’ll tell it.

I set up the Bianchi to the trainer for another quick 10 mile warm up before heading out on the Houston – Magnolia Texas roads on the Lemond. I set up the bike and jumped on it as usual, started spinning and thought about how many guys I know right now who probably cannot ride due to being in the military and deployed. After spending 20 years serving in the US Navy, I still have many friends serving. Well, I then started thinking about some of the guys who may never be able to ride again due to injuries sustained while serving the country I love. That lead me to think about the Purple Heart Donations I have given over the last 18 month’s living here in Texas.

Anyway, to shorten the story, I decided that as soon as I am done with my training ride today, I’d get the bikes loaded up and take them to Purple Heart. Purple Heart is a great foundation that has been around for many, many years. Here is there stated purpose:

To raise funds for service, welfare, and rehabilitation work in connection with the members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart of the U.S.A. (a congressionally chartered veterans organization), those who are eligible for membership therein, or any wounded, disabled and/or handicapped veteran, his widow, orphan or survivors, For the support and maintenance of liaison services in any or all offices of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, soldier’s homes or other administration of veteran’s affairs wherever and whenever deemed necessary.
